“Nothing in the world is as soft and pliable as water.
However, nothing can beat hard and inflexible.
The soft conquers the hard; the gentle conquers the hard.’
– Tao Te Ching, verse 78
Highly sensitive and empathic people should adopt a softer approach to shadow work – I’ll say it right from the beginning. Let me explain why.
Gentleness is a quality that I don’t think many of us fully understand or practice in our daily lives. If you are a sensitive person, you will feel this to the extreme. Society is simply not designed to move slowly and be receptive. It is focused on a do more and do it faster TikTok-meets-Shaine mentality.
Even in the world of self-help and internal workthere is a kind of aggression and sometimes violence that often goes unnamed. Sensitive people pick up on this more than anyone, so some healing and transformational practices seem extraordinary.
Soul Work Compass Course:
Drifting through life without direction is exhausting. If you feel paralyzed by confusion or self-doubt, this course is your map out of the fog. We will guide you safely through your inner darkness to reveal your true needs, values, beliefs, wounds and sacred gift. Turn your confusion into crystal clear direction and find your True North today.
Shadow work (exploring your “dark side”) is one such scary path. It has a lot to do with the exploration of trauma, buried wounds and discomforts such as shame, anger and grief. But it can often feel like we’re on a witch hunt to find all those hidden parts of us and bring them out into the light so they stop screwing with our lives.
Of course, for some people this kind of thing Call of Duty approach can work. But I would argue that in the long run (because shadow work there is years of practice), it doesn’t work.
Therefore, what I write here will help very sensitive and empathic people to do shadow work more effectively, it will also help those with medium sensitivity. Because, as the ancient words of the Tao Te Ching show, softness overcomes hardness after all.

Shadow work doesn’t have to be a witch hunt

There is so much useless or misguided advice out there today regarding shadow work. Here’s what some of them sound like:
- “expose” your shadow (no, shadow work does not have to be an exposure of violence)
- “What you resist remains” (sometimes resistance is a wise sign from the nervous system to to stop before re-injuring yourself)
- “True shadow work is dark and difficult” (no it shouldn’t be)
- “If it doesn’t hurt, it doesn’t work” (sometimes shadow work can be joyful)
- “Focusing on the light is it a form of spiritual bypass» (no, not always; sometimes it’s just what a person needs)
For highly sensitive and empathic people, such messages can cause feelings of shame, avoidance, fear, and the desire not to listen to your inner voice when it comes to shadow work.

Ideas like “toxic positive” and “spiritual detour” can be weapons were also used for their intended purpose to create the belief that you must cry or have a mental breakdown to perform shadow work effectively. But that’s not true (no matter what social media tells you).
I’m here to remind you of that creating security in your body and mind is essential to true shadow work. As a sensitive person, this is especially true because without it, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, closed off, and worse, never do the job again.
Softness is the true shadow work strategy

So what does a “soft” approach to shadow work mean?
First, it means listening to your body and nervous system and don’t “press” on darker areas that feel scary or overwhelming. For sensitive people, this is very important, as the body tends to absorb and retain more stress. Your body is wise, so listen to its message. The chills, the tension, and the urge to run tell you something about who you are capacity eat (aka, as much as you can handle). If your ability is low, your body will let you know.
Shadow work is uncomfortable, yes. But it shouldn’t be it’s scary. If it’s scary, it’s most likely a sign that there’s some deep trauma that needs to be worked through with the help of a professional, such as a therapist. For example, one time I got so deep into my inner work that I ran into a hate-filled anger that kept saying disturbing things to me – yes, yes, I had to see a therapist about it and thankfully it worked out.
Second, it is a gentle approach to shadow work slowly but surely. You don’t have to dive into the depths of your inner darkness in one day – you can’t. This is a process that takes time. Many people say “do shadow work”. But you are not simple to do this. You practice it over and over again. It becomes a way of life and a mindset.
Third, it is a gentle approach to shadow work choosing gentleness and curiosity over judgment and “fixing” thinking. We are not here to negatively judge or even try to overtly or covertly “fix” dysfunctional or wounded parts of ourselves. Real shadow work uses what I call framework of the SOUL:
This feelings what the body feels observes feelings and thoughts that arise understands what part they come from (like the scared inner child), and the sentences love to this part.
Finally, a soft, human-friendly approach to shadow work prefers rest just like activity. Here, vacation isn’t seen as mindlessly browsing Instagram and rotting on the couch. This is seen as a real vacation. Give your mind and body space to relax and decompress.
Rest helps restore and replenish energy and is vital for shadow work work My personal practice includes a combination of naps, meditation and energy healing like Reikiand it works like a charm.
You may not need to dissect the wounds yet

I don’t want to encourage avoidance here, but I also don’t want to ignore a truth that many don’t voice:
Sometimes shadow work is “too much” for your current life. Sometimes you need something simpler, effortless, receptive, or focused on self-love and self-service. That’s good too.
As a very sensitive empathic personsometimes I just don’t have the ability to journal my repressed feelings or process a trigger from the past. Sometimes I just need comfort and coziness to snuggle up on the sofa with a blanket and look out over the street with a cup of hot tea. Sometimes this is enough.
So let’s not pathologize softness and see it as something “weak”. Necessary at everything stages and levels of shadow work.
In the words of writer Katherine Henson,
“A soft heart in a cruel world is courage, not weakness.”
