You can tell a lot about a person by the way they talk to their dog. Not whether almost everyone does, but how. Some people say hello quickly and move on. Others see everything as a conversation with a roommate who has opinions, moods, and an interest in how the day is going.
“What do you think, hmm? Should we have a treat today?” No response is expected. It was never meant to be. People who talk to their animals in this way usually have several warm qualities, and once you start noticing them, you’ll see them everywhere you look.
1. They notice what everyone feels
People who talk to their pets usually read them all day long. The flattened ears, the slow tail, the way the cat left the room the moment the suitcase came out. They’re telling it because they’re already paying attention. “You’re not sure about that, are you?”
The same radar does not turn off near people. A person who notices that their dog is anxious often notices that you were quiet at dinner or that your friend’s “I’m fine” wasn’t okay at all. Tuning into a creature that can’t explain itself turns out to be good practice at tuning into people who just won’t.
2. Complete lack of self-awareness
You don’t need to care much about how you look to talk to an animal in a full baby voice in public. And these people do not.
They’ll bark at a dog in the vet’s office, have a whole conversation with a parrot, ask a goldfish how her day was, all without a single hint of embarrassment. There is something liberating about being around someone like that. They exited the play, most of the adults continue to run.
If they’re willing to look silly for a cat, they’re usually cool with looking silly in general. This makes them easy, comfortable company.
3. Think aloud
A lot of pet talk is just thinking out loud with witnesses. “Where did I put my keys? Any ideas?” The dog will not help, but the main thing is to say it out loud.
People who process this way tend to be natural externalizers: they process things by talking about them, and it doesn’t really matter if anyone is listening. You can see the same habit in how they handle a problem at work or a disagreement with a friend. They spell it out, not pour it in, and that makes them easier to read and easier to trust.
What is happening to them is usually visible because they are already saying it.
4. They are loyal to a fault
Someone who calls their cat their son tells you something about how they bond. When they drop a creature, they drop it all the way. It gets a nickname, a birthday, a place in a family group chat.
Such devotion rarely stops at a pet.
These are often friends who remember the date of your surgery, who stop by on the anniversary of a difficult event, who treat the people they love as permanent people rather than passing company. The pet just gets the most visible version of the loyalty they show widely. Once you get on their list, you tend to stay there.
5. If something small needs to be taken care of
Look at how tenderly these people treat all the helpless. A three-legged savior, a nervous pupil, an ancient dog who can hardly see anymore. Most of all, they talk to the weak, softly and constantly, as if the words themselves are some kind of concern.
You will see the same tenderness shown with a crying child, an elderly parent, a friend who is barely holding on. Some people are simply touched by things that need to be protected, and this is first of all seen in the way they treat a small animal that trusts them completely. It is one of the most attractive things a person can be.
6. Giving everything a name and backstory
It’s never just a dog. This is Sir Reginald, who is very much a gentleman and does not approve of postmen. The cat has a complete character, a set of grievances, a favorite song. The hamster has political views.
This imagination refuses to fully develop.
People who attribute complex inner lives to their pets are usually playful in other areas as well. They name their car, they make up voices, they turn a boring errand into a little one. Life around them is easy because they always make things more fun than they need to be.
7. They are better listeners than they seem
People who talk to their pets are often the best people listeners. All this one-sided chatter at home seems to leave them with a lot of patience for the real thing.
They will allow you to finish the story without jumping. They ask the following question. They remember a little thing you mentioned once a few weeks ago. Perhaps practicing warmth toward a being who never interrupts makes it easier to extend the same warmth to people who do. Whatever the reason, having a friend who talks to their dog often makes you feel most heard.
The dog, of course, does not understand a single word. That’s part of the charm. The conversation was never about being understood.
So the next time you catch someone deep in conversation with a creature that can only blink back at them, take it as a good sign. This usually means it’s hot out there, looking for somewhere to go, and happy to start with whoever is closest.
